Nutmeg is an often overlooked and often underrated psychoactive that can be found in spice racks worldwide. Classified as a diliriant, the nutmeg didn't become popular until the spice trade and the discovery of the West Indies. Among the first to discover and use it as a mind altering substance were British sailors on trade vessels, who after running out of rum and desperate for something to break up the monotony decided to chance dipping into their spice supply for a nauseating slightly hallucinogenic psychostimulant. Oftentimes slaves on cargo ships would be caught and punished for the same thing.
Many users equate nutmeg, and it's sister spice mace (which have comparable concentrations of the same active ingredients) with MDA or MDMA. Dosage for nutmeg to be psychoactive tend to be in the one to ten tablespoon range (others say five to twenty grams).
One of the interesting effects of ingesting nutmeg is the tendency for a long come up. Sometimes the nutmeg won't begin displaying psychoactive effects for upwards of five hours. Also, it has a long duration of effects, sometimes not wearing off completely for up to two days.
Nutmeg is commonly sold in a ground up form, but this is nearly entirely void of psychoactive effects. Nutmeg when obtained for psychoactive use should be gotten in whole form.
It is suggested that Nutmeg may interact badly with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and thus shouldn't be taken with MAOI's.
Nutmeg has also been used to produce feelings of excitability and happiness even in minute doses, which is a large part of why it is so commonly used in recipes for yule celebrations. It has also been used for this purpose as an antidepressant.
Nutmeg also has been known for a long time to cause uterine contractions, and had been used shortly after it's introduction to Europe as an abortogen. Women who used this spice to abort pregnancy were often referred to as "Nutmeg ladies"

Time to share another entry from my herbal. Much of this information came from AOZ and is also included in her original post above, but I'm including all of it anyway.
Myristica fragrans
Folk Names: Nutmeg, Mace, Qoust, Sadhika, Wohpala, Bicuiba Acu,
Warnings: Use internally with care. Safe in food use quantities, but psychoactive in larger amounts. Do not use while pregnant, in combination with MAOI's, or with a compromised liver.
Gender: Masculine
Planet: Mercury (Mace), Jupiter (Nutmeg)
Element: Air (Mace), Fire (Nutmeg)
Magical Use: Mace, which is the flesh of the fruit of the Myristica fragrans tree, is burned as incense to increase psychic power and carried to promote intelligence. The Nutmeg, the pit of this tree's fruit, has long been carried as good luck charms. They are strung alongside Star Anise and Tonka Beans to make a powerful charm. Nutmegs are carried to prevent rheumatism, cold sores, neuralgia, boils and sties. A whole Nutmeg hung from the neck of an infant will aid it in teething. Nutmeg is a good addition to powders and incense for money and prosperity, especially sprinkled on a green candle and burned. To guarantee the fidelity of a lover, cut a single Nutmeg into four equal pieces. Bury one in the earth, throw one from a high place into the air, burn the third in fire, and boil the fourth in water. Carry this last piece with you at all times, sleeping with it under your pillow, and no one will tempt your mate. All parts of the Myristica fragrans have similar psychoactive properties, but the Nutmeg is the most potent part, with Mace as a near second. The active constituents break down very rapidly when exposed to air, so the powdered Nutmeg is almost useless for this purpose. One must begin with whole Nutmeg and grind it as needed. The use of Nutmeg as a psychoactive has long been known and was discovered in its native Indies, but was popularized and brought to the western world by the British navy. Having heard rumours about Nutmeg's properties while trading in the Indies, they used it as a substitute when a ship's supply of rum ran out during long voyages. Nutmeg has properties similar to MDMA (Ecstasy). It is slightly hallucinogenic, though it can also cause mild nausea. Nutmeg's use in Yuletide recipes is owed to its mood heightening and antidepressant effects, which are present to some degree even in very small doses. The sense of joy and well being created by Nutmeg, the warming effect of Cinnamon, and the inclination for high fat content to help resist cold is the formula for a great many winter time recipes. For most people, subject to weight and tolerance three to five whole Nutmegs makes an effective psychoactive dose. Other measurements used include anywhere from one to ten tablespoons or five to twenty grams. It must be noted that Nutmeg takes an exceptionally long time to manifest psychoactive effects, up to five hours, and some of its effects may last up to two days; so in order to use it in this manner one should set aside quite a bit of time. Nutmeg is counter-indicated for use with MAOI's. Over use can cause liver damage. It also causes uterine contractions and has been used as an abortifacient, a subtance to induce abortion. Thus it should not be used by one who wishes to remain pregnant. European women who used Nutmeg in antiquity to cause abortion were sometimes known as “Nutmeg Ladies”. I have heard rumours that Nutmeg is used in psychoactive doses with breakfast on a daily basis by many Middle Eastern women; meaning that these women live their lives in a continuous chemically altered state. No doubt this makes a difficult lifestyle much more bearable, but it must also wreak havoc on their livers and I'm sure it drastically shortens their lifespan.
May you find what you seek, Alice
