Another excerpt from The Living Pharmakopoiia.
Taxonomy: There are at least eight Dicentra species, but I have only encountered spectabilis and formosa, which are the most common. I am not aware of the medicinal properties of the other species, but they should be similar.
Toxicology: Both varieties, spectabilis and formosa may have psychoactive and sedative properties, being members of the Fumariaceae sub-family of Papaveraceae, the Poppy family. However there is some question as to their toxicity and I need to study further before I can recommend internal use.
Gender: Feminine
Planet: Venus
Element: Water
Magical Ref: Love, Love Divination, Forbidden, Dark Magic
Use: As a simple love divination, crush a Bleeding Heart flower. It is said that if the juice is red, the one you love also loves you. If the juice is white, your love does not return your feelings.
When grown, this plant brings love into your life.
If grown indoors, however, the Bleeding Heart is said to produce negative energy. Supposedly this may be prevented by planting a coin in the soil. I prefer simply to plant it out of doors. It is a hardy perennial which comes back from the root.
Bleeding Heart also has application in love spells, particularly concerning the painful aspects of love, such as recovery from a bad relationship.
It may even be useful in workings to seek revenge on an unfaithful or abusive lover, but I would not recommend such a path to the inexperienced or the faint of heart; if you'll excuse the pun.
May you find what you seek,
Alice
