Many cultures (to put it very generally) use wine in there rituals. The Romans have man accounts of ritual wine drinking for good health, good fun, good harvest, or generally just because the water wasn't drinkable at the time (ironically the lead in the wine glass was probably just as bad). To the Aztecs that gave a kind of wine/coco and chilli powder drink to the sacrificial person/s. It is safe to say that at some point in history nearly every culture has had fermented/alcoholic beverage to call their own. It's fairly recent history that has groups that prohibit or ban the consumption of alcohol but that is because (for some) the rituals became a bit excessive and so they slapped on some strict rules to reign it in (government over compensating isn't a new phenomena) I know there are other reasons but that's one of the reasons alcohol became more prohibited. People quickly learned that alcohol is tasty but mind altering. Yes, wine is mind altering given the appropriate dosage to get drunk.
I thought of this when I was doing a rain ceremony and saw my silver chalice that I keep over my fire place mantle. I have a bottle of red wine and I felt if I wanted to do blood magick maybe red wine could be substituted for real blood in some instances... I dunno I just had the thought before I went on to focus on the much needed rain.
Alcohol is one of the more popular mind altering substances. It has an inconsistency because of how easily abused the substance is. You are harming your body once you go over the one drink. You feel that "buzz" because your body is responding to a toxin in the system. If more people fully understood this they'd stop before the "buzz" but then again alcohol is addicting.
With all that in mind. I still use it on the occasion like celebrating Samahn because that is my one time a year I drink to excess.
Anyways, gotta go I shall elaborate more later perhaps.
